Promoting research

"The Art and Science of Risk" is our motto. More than a simple statement, it is a philosophy for the SCOR group and its subsidiaries, which have long been interested in promoting research, development and the knowledge of risks by forging partnerships or by financing prizes and innovative programmes. Open to the world, the SCOR group shares its knowledge with its clients and civil society through various channels. Actuarial science: recognised and promoted by the SCOR group SCOR was aware from a very early stage of the importance of actuarial science in terms of the overall evaluation of risks. The Group encourages innovation and support education in this field through the organisation of actuarial awards at a national level. Each year, SCOR rewards several young actuaries in Europe for the quality of their research with potential risk management applications. At the same time, SCOR promotes the development of actuarial science through its involvment in teaching or in associations supporting academia. This is particularly the case in Germany, where SCOR is involved in various institutions (Association of the University of Applied Sciences of Cologne, Research Centre of the University of Karlsruhe, Association of the University of Hannover for the Promotion of Insurance Sciences, Faculty of Economic and Mathematical Sciences of the Albert Einstein University in Ulm) as well as in France, England, Italy and Switzerland where SCOR’s actuarial prizes are awarded by prestigious juries.

Risk and insurance economics A member and director of the Geneva Association, which has an international reputation in the field of insurance economics, SCOR contributes actively to research in this field. Comprising the CEOs of 80 of the world's largest insurance companies, the Geneva Association identifies the structural trends likely to influence the development of the insurance indudstry and interprets the strategic challenges of the sector. At the same time, SCOR promotes research on risk through its involvement in academia. The "Market Risk and Value Creation" chair ("SCOR-IDEI" research chair) is housed within the Risk Foundation. The objective of this research is to conduct research on the markets, thereby enabling risks to be shared between economic players. It mobilises research teams around the topic of risk sharing, with a multi-disciplinary approach (industrial economics, decision-making theory, finance, econometrics and psychology). As part of this chair, SCOR, the Institute of Industrial Economics and the University of Paris-Dauphine have created two awards: “SCOR – Geneva Risk and Insurance Best Paper Review” and “SCOR-EGRIE Young Economist Best Paper Award”.
SCOR has recently joined forces with the Fondation Jean-Jacques Laffont – Toulouse Science Economiques to create a research chair dedicated to a major new research project on economic developments in the wake of the crisis that has hit the global economy.
The two research chairs with which SCOR is involved organise academic seminars where researchers and industry professionals can exchange views on the latest research developments.

Research in Life and HealthA subsidiary of SCOR, SCOR Global Life invests in proprietary research and development centres, which form part of its range of services and provide a better understanding of specific aspect of risk. Alongside the research carried out directly by dedicated teams, the research and development centres complement their knowledge by forging scientific partnerships with recognised experts in their fields of expertise (Longevity, Long-Term Care, cardio-vascular diseases, etc.).
The four centres regularly organise conferences and breakfast debates in order to promote the exchange of knowledge between SCOR’s various employees and external experts.

Active participation in societal debates and knowledge sharing Risk affects the environment of most human activities, from the simplest acts of everyday life to the major questions relating to the future of humankind and the planet. SCOR is involved in these major debates through its participation in the commissions of several professional associations, and through its publications (SCOR Focus, SCOR Paper, SCOR Technical Newsletter). Furthermore, SCOR organises international events and training sessions such as Campus for its clients, which focus on societal issues.
